New things in ceramics
I just finished an 8-week class at Fountain Square Clay Center, focused on wood and soda firings.
It was fun to learn about the process and spend time with my classmates watching the wood kiln go. It’s an involved, collaborative process.
The work that comes out is very earthy-looking, and tends towards browns, grays, and reds. It’s not my favorite aesthetic as I usually like a lot of pinks and purples and bright monoprint designs. The randomness of the results is very interesting.
I fired a total of 10 pieces across the two kilns and unfortunately4 were broken in the soda kiln.
In addition to learning about atmospheric firings, I learned to make lidded jars in the class, which I really enjoyed.
